John Hanvey, son of John and Annie Hanvey, lived with his sister at 5 Salisbury Place, Ligoniel, Greater Shankill, Belfast

.

The 1911 Ireland Census has John living at 39 Legnavea (Shankill, Antrim) with his sister Sarah Jane, occupation, Flax Spinner. Johns occupation at this time is given as Flax Dresser. Grandfather William John Thompson, 59 years, Flax Rougher, is registered as Head Of Family, and grandmother Esther, 60 years, lives within the house also, as does a Eliza Burns, 71 years, Mill Worker, Flax Spinner, an aunt of their grandfather

John signed the Ulster Covenant on the 28th of September 1912, Ulster Day, within Belfast City Hall.

John joined the Royal Irish Rifles and served as a Private 12289.

He is then recorded within the Machine Gun Corps.

He was posted as part of the British Expeditionary Force to France on the 2nd of October 1915.

John was a Lance Corporal within 107th Company Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) when he was Killed In Action on the 24th March 1917 aged 23 years

Of course it is now known that Mr Sarah Jane Walker, Nee Hanvey, lost her husband Ronald McDonald Walker before the years end on the 22nd November 1917.

Johns Soldiers Effects were left to his sister, now Mrs Sarah Jane Walker.
